Up Wins Teen Choice Award
So in the flood of Twilight, Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus wins (not that there’s anything wrong with them) one has to wonder if serious contenders for major awards ceremonies could compete at this years Teen Choice Awards. Basically what I’m trying to say is, I know these awards aren’t anything to pararde about, but do vividly show what the 13-18 demographic are into currently. It seems as though the teens of America have good taste in summer comedies this year.

Vicon unveils boujou 5.0
Vicon, developer of motion capture and image understanding systems, for the entertainment, life science and defence industries, has today announced that it will be showcasing a pre-release version of its eagerly awaited boujou 5 at the Siggraph conference this August.
Building on its established ease of use and automation, boujou 5 is enhanced with a unique new way of solving 3D camera positioning and motion paths from image sequences. This new approach radically accelerates the solve and allows users more manual interaction within complex shots.
The upgrade includes exciting new features that many existing boujou users will have been eagerly anticipating. Including:
• New Automatic Sequential Solver. Previous versions of boujou took the entire shot into account before delivering a solve. Now, it looks at a single frame at a time, which not only enables the user to intervene, it can make the entire process a lot faster
• A fully functional Graph Editor, which lets the user manually tweak the camera data and, if necessary, resolve. boujou 5 also provides the ability to lock valid sections of solve data or sections which are known to be correct, which animators can then use to improve other areas
• The Reference Frames feature allows users to import still images taken with any camera and use them to assist in a solve
Phil Elderfield, Product Manager at Vicon said: “Customers have been asking for greater control, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering with boujou 5. The new manual tracking tools will give users the ability to step in and work directly with the data. Even the trickiest shot can be solved in boujou 5.”
Douglas Reinke, CEO and president at Vicon said: “boujou has always been the weapon of choice for top matchmovers, being used on films such as Charlotte’s Web, Tropic Thunder and Angels and Demons.
“Three years of research and development have gone into creating boujou 5 and we’re confident it stands out as a complete matchmoving package.”
Specification Sheet
Features
1. New automatic sequential solver
• Previous versions of boujou used a global camera solving technique, taking the whole shot into account before delivering a result. This could be a lengthy process with certain shots
• The sequential solver solves a frame at a time so that the solve is presented to the user as it happens
• It has the ability to handle different parts of a shot in different ways
• It considers only an area of frames around those being solved so can be much faster on many shots
• The user can stop at any point and intervene to make corrections if necessary.
• It can be used to fill gaps and extend broken solves
2. Fully functional graph editor
• For manual tweaking of boujou camera data
• Gives users complete control over what they export
• Brings into boujou tools to perform a task which they currently perform in third party package (e.g. Maya)
• Saves time and money since seats of animation packages can be used more efficiently (by animators)
• Allows edited data to be passed back into boujou for solve improvement
• Provides the ability to lock valid sections of solve data or sections which are known to be correct, then use this to improve areas that are not
• Has a non destructive workflow
• Has the ability to import and edit external data (e.g. motion control data)
3. Reference Frames
• Allows users to import still images taken with any camera and use them to assist in solving
• The focal length of these can be read automatically from meta data (EXIFF Tags) if present
• Provides benefits when shots exhibit little or no parallax
• Reference Frames are a common customer request
4. All New Target Tracker
• The pattern matching tracker in boujou has been completely re-written
• It has a faster tracking algorithm
• It provides a faster workflow
• It allows target tracking by specifying a pattern on a single frame
• It allows tracking of multiple patterns simultaneously
5. New software based application management and licensing
• Provides a wider range of software management and licensing functionality for system administrators
• It allows for faster delivery of software to customer (no dongle to ship)
Key benefits
• A wider range and more difficult shots can be tracked with boujou 5
• Faster workflows and performance
Specifications
Windows: XP SP3 / Vista SP1
Intel Macintosh: 10.4 Tiger / 10.5 Leopard
Linux: Red Hat Enterprise 4.X / CentOS 4.X / Fedora Core 5, 8 & 11
All platforms 32-bit. Linux and OS X versions of boujou 5 will be available some weeks after the Windows release.
About boujou
Vicon’s match moving software, boujou (boo-zhoo), was the first fully automated camera calibration and tracking system. Using advanced adaptive algorithms developed from vision science research, the application removes previous limitations on what is achievable in visual effects production by enabling 3D professionals to derive complex camera tracks and calibration data from film and video material.
boujou has made a major contribution to high-profile television and film productions, music videos and commercials by facilitating the creation of visual effects that seamlessly combine live action and 3D. In 2002, boujou was awarded a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award.
About Vicon
Academy Award®-winning Vicon is the world’s largest supplier of precision motion tracking systems, and match moving software. 3DCreative Magazine - August 2009 Issue - Available Now!
August 2009 brings you the 48th issue of 3DCreative. Which, if I’m not mistaken (and I’ve calculated this wrong before, so bear with me while I’ll add this up…), is the mark of four whole years in production! Woo-hoo! It’s been a great four years and we’re happy to announce that we’re going for five, so stick with us for more and more (and more) 3D into 2010!
So what’s new this month? Well, you’ll notice a slight change to 3DCreative in that we’re going tutorial crazy from here on in and cutting back slightly on interviews and making of articles. We’ll still have the gallery as normal, and the quality is certainly not going south, so we hope you’ll like the changes we’re making and enjoy all the tutorials we’ll be covering now and into the future. As always, suggestions are very welcome – pop an email over to me at lynette@3dtotal.com if you’d like us to consider any topics for future issues!
New to the August issue is chapter one of a three-part series on Creating Custom Textures, by in-house 3DTotal artist, Richard Tilbury. And what’s more, we’re giving away another great selection of Total Textures for FREE in this issue to accompany the tutorial, so forward-click to p.54 to get yourselves some free textures and learn some top tips from our very own texturing artist – who, by the way, worked previously as a texture artist for a U.K. games company before joining 3DTotal, and he sure knows his stuff!
3DCreative is all about tutorials now, so catch up with Joseph Harford on p.82 as he takes our next-gen character low-poly base mesh, created in last month’s instalment, into ZBrush for the first of two-parts sculpting, before moving onto the mapping and unwrapping in chapter four of the series. James Busby (LightWave), Gavin Goulden (Maya) and John Hayes (modo) will be back with us in part four of the Next-Gen Character Creation tutorial series when Joseph hands over the high poly ZBrush sculpt for the mapping/unwrapping fun to begin!
Also in its second chapter this month we have part two of Photoshop for 3D by Richard Tilbury, who takes us through retouching final renders, and our ZBrush Manimal Creation tutorial hits part three this month with Brazilian artist, Diego Maia returning to 3DCreative to take us through the production of an Aquatic-Man, on p.38. Diego also gives us some ZBrush rendering tips, the result of which is this month’s front cover feature!
Our artist interview featuring in this month’s magazine is with Californian-based artist, Christophe Desse, who teases us with sunny beach stories (whilst we sit here under what seem to be forever gray skies), and tells us a little about his move from film and advertising into real-time projects. You’ll no doubt have seen one of Christophe’s stylized cars featured in last month’s gallery, so you can now take full advantage of our interview and delve straight into his portfolio on p.6.
Finally, our making of has been kindly contributed by Marco Aurelio Magalhaes da Silva, another talented Brazilian-based artist who talks us through his workflow when dealing with inorganic subjects, such as this beast of a car, the Mustang Shelby 67, on p.66. And before you leave us and wait patiently for next month’s issue, be sure to check out our top picks in the gallery, with images by Andrei Cristea, Stéphan Brisson, and Christian Rambow just to name a few - p.14 is the one want!
Enjoy!

Blender 2.5 at Siggraph 2009
During an almost two year process of design, review, and artist feedback, the Blender team has implemented a new core architecture for Blender. The key changes involve a high level of configurability of the interface and the ways tools are used, and a further elaboration of the original non-overlapping and non-blocking parallel working UI system. All of the interface elements in Blender are now defined using a scriptable layout engine, with scripted access to all of the data Blender provides. Keyboard layouts for hot keys and user input can be changed on the fly, including definition of macros, and reapplying tools with adjusted settings.
Blender 2.50 also provides a upgraded animation system. Now every setting and option can be animated via function curves, higher level actions, the non-linear animation mixer, or scripting.
Blender Foundation is also preparing the third Open Movie project, “Durian”, which will explore epic action content in 4k digital cinema. Six artists and two developers will work in the studio of Blender Institute, for a period of 6–8 months. A key goal of Durian is to ensure that Blender 2.5 series is production ready.
The first of the official 2.5 versions will be released in October, during the 8th annual Blender Conference in Amsterdam. The Blender team plans to give regular updates, with the 2.5 project to be completed with the Durian film premiere in 2nd quarter 2010.

More Details on Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray and Luxo Jr. Premium Combo Pack
Let’s start off with the mega-delayed Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray which was originally slated for last May with A Bug’s Life. The set has been increased from a 2-Disc set to a 3-Disc. To refresh your memory, it was previously announced that Monsters will contain a brand new game Roz’s 100-Door Challenge, a Roundtable Discussion featuring Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich and Darla K. Anderson and a new featurette Monster’s Inc Ride and Go Seek: Building Monstropolis in Tokyo! Also included are all of the bonus material from the original DVD release.
Moving on we have the Luxo Jr. Premium Combo Pack featuring, you guessed it… an actual replica of Luxo Jr.! Previously only available for pre-order in the UK as the Pixar Luxo Lamp Collection, this limited edition item will be available on November 10th in the US. To differ, it’ll be packaged with Up on Blu-ray instead of the whole Pixar Blu-ray collection. Luxo Jr. himself is an actual working lamp and has a storing area at the base for Blu-rays. It comes at a steep price of $199 but I’m sure it’s worth it.
You can pre-order Monsters, Inc. on 3-Disc Blu-ray from Amazon now. US pre-orders for the Luxo Jr. Premium Combo Pack coming soon.
Up Blu-ray & DVD Out November 10th; Features & Cover Art Revealed!
This release will come in three main variations: a 4-Disc Blu-ray (2 Blu-rays, a Digital Copy for handheld devices, and a standard DVD), a 2-Disc Special Edition DVD (can’t confirm this one) and a 1-Disc Standard DVD. The barebones 1-Disc release will only include the shorts Partly Cloudy and Dug’s Special Mission as extras. The 2-Disc would add commentary, a featurette and a digital copy. On the other hand the 4-Disc set is packed with bonus material!
In this collector’s must-have you will find all of the above plus making-of extras such as character focused Geriatric Hero, Canine Companions, Russell: Wilderness Explorer and Our Giant Flightless Friend, Kevin, as well as set, research and music focused Homemakers of Pixar, Balloons and Flight, Adventure is Out There (the much talked about trip to South America) and Composing for Characters. You can also find alternate scenes like Married Life and The Many Endings of Muntz included in the set. Like all others Pixar Blu-rays you’ll also be treated to Cine-Explore with Pete Docter and Bob Peterson and an exclusive Java based game called Global Guardian Badge Game. To see the detailed description of these features click on [Extended Description] at this link.
The 1-Disc release will be retailing for US SRP $19.99 and the 4 Disc Set will be selling for US SRP $34.99 through Disney. You can pre-order these releases at the links above and receive a pin set or through Amazon (which is listing a different price) among others.
There are two other major Pixar releases coming our way November 10th. Stand by for a write up on those.
Absence: What I've Missed
That’s exactly why I haven’t posted in days, I’m not ignoring you, I swear! Well anyways I’m back and I apologize for my absence (second time this month/won’t happen again) so as a token here’s some notable news I missed:
Woody’s Last Name: Here’s some surprising news coming from Lee Unkrich on Twitter, Woody has an official last name! That would be Sheriff Woody Pride. Very fitting for this iconic character. Will we be hearing this name in Toy Story 3? No, but it has been his surname since early development of the original picture! Apparently the name was used in the description for the Toy Story Toy Box Collection once. Happy Early Birthday Mr. Unkrich!
Up’s Worldwide Success: Last Friday Up opened in major territories including France, Israel, Spain and Taiwan as their number one movie! Internationally Pete Docter’s latest has collected about $71 million. Meanwhile, Up is ending it’s US run with $286 million so far. (via Box Office Mojo)
So I hope you accept my apology (with the late news) because we’ll be back with lots of news, actually really soon. The next post should be very exciting…

Blender 2.5 Release Date
The Blender Foundation issued a press release at SIGGRAPH yesterday with information on Blender 2.5 and its relation to Durian. For the first time ever, an expected release date was included! New Release offers a new interface with full customization and a completely revamped animation system
New Orleans, August 03 — Siggraph 2009 – The Blender Foundation, the organization behind the free and open source 3D creation suite Blender, today unveiled the result of the Blender 2.5 project, a fully customizable interface layout system, with advanced access to all tools and options Blender offers.
3D Printing now in stainless steel
You can stop pounding on that anvil now; steel fabrication has moved onto the web. Shapeways, a company that made its name offering custom 3-D printing in plastic and resin, will now print your designs in stainless steel. All you have to do is upload your brilliant CAD design (or pick from a range of stock items). Shapeways will print it out in cold, shiny steel, and mail it to you.
As with any 3-D printing, the object is built up in layers. In this case, powdered steel is laid down, alternating with a binding material, in thin layers until the whole piece appears. Then your finished model is heated, cured and, according to Shapeways, "infused with bronze."
Steel printing from Shapeways is limited to models that pass specific size and detail guidelines. The printing leaves some lines and visible layers in the object, they say, so be prepared: your finished piece probably won't look as smooth and perfect as other bits of metal you own. Shapeways' cost chart quotes $10 per square centimeter for steel printing, which could add up to a hefty price for larger items. That said, being able to make your own metal objects without big equipment or the threat of horrible burns is pretty cool at any price.

Spheron launches world's first professional HDR video camera
HDRI pioneer SpheronVR has launched the world‘s first professional camera capable of recording live footage as a series of HDR files.
One of the few truly innovative products on show at Siggraph 2009, the SpheroCam HDRV is capable of outputting footage as a series of EXR files, capturing a range of 20 f-stops.
The files can be captured at 30 frames per second, at full 1,920×1,080 HD resolution.
The camera is capable of recording five hours of continuous footage, amounting to a massive 24 Terabytes of data. The data is stored in a dedicated unit attached to the camera.
SpheronVR has already sold the first model to the UK‘s University of Warwick, where it will be used in reserach on HDR compression algorithms. No commercial pricing for the system has been announced.
Being able to capture a continuous series of HDR files on set rather than a single reference image should open up completely new possibilities for VFX work.
It will be interesting to see which of SpheronVR‘s customers, which include leading UK studios The Mill and Glassworks, makes use of the new system first.
OC3 Entertainment launches new facial animation system
Games industry specialist OC3 Entertainment has released a standalone version of its FaceFX software, previously used on over 100 major games.
The package takes audio and text files of dialogue and converts them automatically into facial animation, coping with both morph and bone-based rigs.
The system is even capable of using audio files to drive hand or body motion, as evidenced by the brief demo we saw at Siggraph.
OC3 tells us that it is keen to expand outside its games user base and is actively targeting animation professionals. More details below.
PRESS RELEASE
OC3 Entertainment Releases FaceFX Studio Standalone
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. Jul 30, 2009: OC3 Entertainment announces the release of FaceFX Studio Standalone, a new version of a facial animation program used in the development of over 100 triple-A video game titles. Previously, the FaceFX solution was licensed on a per-game-title basis, limiting the adoption of the technology to top tier game developers. Starting at SIGGRAPH 2009, FaceFX will also be available on a per-seat basis to any 3D animation professional requiring superior facial animation technology.
FaceFX (www.facefx.com) is a solution for synchronizing facial movements to an audio file. The software generates curves for lip synchronization, head rotations, eyebrow raises, and other speech gestures using audio and the accompanying text transcription. Animations can be modified and then imported into 3ds Max, Maya, Softimage, and MotionBuilder via custom plugins. FaceFX can be used with bones- and morph-based characters and is compatible with any conceivable character setup.
“Over the past seven years, OC3 Entertainment has developed technology in coordination with the needs of the world’s most respected game developers,” says Doug Perkowski, CEO of OC3 Entertainment. “We are thrilled that FaceFX Studio Standalone will make that technology accessible to more users.” FaceFX Studio Standalone will be sold on a per-seat basis for US $1,995.

The Pixel Farm Launch PFPipe at Siggraph 2009
PFPipe is a C API for reading PFTrack projects and obtaining the data contained therein, this will allow people to establish direct integration of PFTrack data into 3rd party applications and in-house pipelines and technologies. The first release of PFPipe will provide access to both PFTrack’s camera data and renowned distortion models, as well as providing all project links to footage and clips used in the project file itself.
To provide a working example of how PFPipe could provide useful tools, developers at The Pixel Farm have ported PFBarrel, PFCameraImport and PFDataCombiner to a plug-in set for shake 4.1. The API includes sample C code for applications and a PFTrack project to enable developers and TD’s to quickly develop tools based on this new and unique technology.
Michael Lancaster, Product Director, The Pixel Farm comments: “As with all of our products our aim is to create tools that make production easier and more cost-effective. PFPipe was developed after spending time with our customers, seeing their workflows and thus creating a tool that they needed.”

Autodesk integrates Face Robot into Softimage 2010: brings rapid facial animation to
NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 3, 2009 ‚?? At SIGGRAPH 2009, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has launched Autodesk Softimage 2010 3D modeling, animation rendering and compositing software for games, film and television visual effects. Softimage 2010 features an optimized core architecture, integration of the Softimage Face Robot facial rigging and animation toolset, and an expanded and customizable Interactive Creative Environment (ICE) system.
“Over the past year, we‚??ve made Softimage faster, easier to use and more powerful,“ said Stig Gruman, vice president, Autodesk Digital Entertainment Group. “This version provides integrated solutions for digital entertainment creation with the inclusion of Face Robot, scene complexity management tools and improved interoperability with Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk MotionBuilder software.“
Artists have used Softimage to help create stunning movies, commercials and video games, including commercials for BMW, Coca Cola, Kellogg‘s and Monster.com. Janimation, an award-winning animation and motion graphics studio, relied on Softimage to help create Activision‘s latest James Bond-based hit video game, “Quantum of Solace“. Greg Punchatz, senior creative director at Janimation, remarked, “If you only looked at the huge performance increases and workflow enhancements, Softimage 2010 would be a very solid release, but add Face Robot to the mix and you have a home run.”
Key New Features in Autodesk Softimage 2010
- Accelerated Performance: The third iteration of the Softimage GigaCore architecture, GigaCore III, helps deliver superior data handling and speed improvements. Loading and saving large scenes and importing complex character models are faster. In addition, many of the operations most commonly performed on enveloped characters or large numbers of objects execute more rapidly. Also, the Function Curve (FCurve) Editor performs faster when animators are working with large numbers of curves or keys.
