PIXOLOGIC introduces GOZBRUSH!

goz_logo_lrg.png
One of the core functions of ZBrush has always been to provide artists with the ability to create in an environment that allows for complete freedom of expression. The lack of technical barriers that make working with in ZBrush feel like real world sculpting and painting is why so many have created such ground breaking work.

We would now like to introduce you to, GoZ, a new core feature of ZBrush that will bring you even closer to creating at the speed of your imagination. With GoZ, artists can spend less time on technical aspects, and more time on simply being creative. With a single click of a button, GoZ lets you quickly transfer your geometry back and forth between ZBrush and other 3D application like Maya, Cinema 4D, and Modo, with many other applications soon to come. This means that you can place ZBrush and its GoZ feature at the center of any workflow. Not only can you instantly transfer geometry between ZBrush and other 3D applications, but any texture, normal, and displacement maps created with in ZBrush will automatically be connected to the appropriate shader networks in the program of your choosing. Now you are free to work with out the distraction of timely export and import operations. GoZ breaks down the walls between other applications extending the power and fluid nature of ZBrush even further. GoZ is actually a small glimpse at the many powerful features that have been developed for ZBrush 4. At this time we will be releasing the first version of GoZ with the next Mac OSX update in June, Windows users will be able to take advantage of GoZ along with all of the new features that have been added to ZBrush 4 when it is released this August.

For now enjoy the preview movie

and get ready to

GoZ

A detailed GoZBrush communication protocol and software development kit (sdk) will be made available at GoZBrush.com following the relase of GoZ.
This will enable you to easily customize GoZ to fit your existing pipeline.

Up, by Leo N. Holzer

Leo N. Holzer
Special to Upcoming Pixar

Walt Disney once said that "for every laugh there should be a tear." Well, Disney-Pixar’s latest film, "Up," offers a good dose of both.

"Up" opens today across the U.S. and is already being praised by critics in several countries after being featured as the opening night selection earlier this month at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

The PG-rated film tells the story of Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old widower and former balloon salesman who flies his house to South America. He does so in part to make good on a promise he made to his late wife, Ellie, as well as to save the home from a deneloper’s wrecking ball and because he’s not all to keen on moving into a retirement home.

The story pairs Carl with Russell, a pudgy 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer seeking his "assisting the elderly" merit badge. Russell becomes an inadvertent stow-away taken along for the ride to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls.

"Up" is an action-packed, adventure comedy, but one with great heart. It’s arguably among Pixar’s best and it’s certainly the studio’s most emotionally engaging. It’s wildly funny, but it’s also quite tender and touching. Bring tissues and be prepared.

"We’re a big fan of feel," said "Up" director Pete Docter, who previously gave the world "Monsters, Inc." and served as an early draftsman on "Wall-e" in addition to helping write "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2."

"I got to be great friends with Joe Grant, a Disney legend who was one of the heads of story on ‘Dumbo’ (1941) and designed the wicked queen in ‘Snow White’ (1937)," Docter said. Grant was "working up until literally the day he died. He died at his drawing table, just short of his 97th birthday.

"Something he would always tell me is, ‘what are you giving the audience to take home?’ By which, I think he meant yeah jokes and gags are funny, but what’s the emotional thing that’s going to stick in someone’s heart and stay with them for hours, days, years?"

What will resonate with adults in "Up" is a montage early in the film showing Carl and his soul mate, Ellie, set to a poetic waltz composed by Michael Giacchino. This short segment, lasting only a few minutes, follows their meeting as children dreaming of adventure through their marriage and building a life together.

It’s touching but complex in its simplicity as the couple deals with dreams delayed or denied by the sometimes harsh realities of life. It also includes Ellie’s untimely death, a moment that seers itself unto your heart.

Even if you can’t relate to everything that Carl and Ellie go through, you’ll certainly feel empathy for them and be able to forgive Carl any curmudgeonly behavior later in the film.

Docter is most proud of this segment and it’s what some people are going to take home with them: The joys (they’re included, too) and sorrows of the Fredricksens’ life together, followed by gales of laughter and a few more touching scenes later in the film, most involving Carl and Russell and their evolving relationship.

The biggest laughs come thanks to several great sequences following the introduction of a dog named Dug and a rare, flightless gorgeously colored giant bird that Russell names Kevin.
>
There’s also a villain, Carl and Ellie’s childhood hero — an explorer named Charles Muntz — and his pack of dogs, none as cute or friendly as Dug.

Muntz is introduced in "newsreel" footage at the beginning of "Up," but has gone a bit mad after spending decades in the jungles of Venezuela trying to capture this rare bird and return to the U.S. so that he can clear his name in the scientific community.

These characters and the comic elements involving them are sure to delight children, but adults are likely to find themselves laughing just as hard.

Again, the film resonates because of real-life relatable moments: The senior citizen turning off his hearing aid so he doesn’t have to listen to an all-too-chatty child; the boy who has to go to the bathroom five minutes after you’ve asked him; the dog who, thanks to an ingenious collar that gives voice to his thoughts, simply wants to be man or boy’s best friend and play fetch — unless he senses a nearby squirrel. Dug is one of the few cartoon canines that’s utterly believable as a dog, even with this gift of speech.

"Ultimately, I think the humor plays better if it has that foundation of emotion," Docter said. "If you don’t have that, then you might have something that’s light and fun, but it’s the emotion that you take home with you."

"It’s those two things you’re constantly looking for in development," added producer Jonas Rivera. "The entertainment value and origin of the story and then what’s the driver emotionally. All the entertainment value in the world goes only so far unless there’s really that reason for making the movie."

Rivera and Docter credit the culture and working environment at Emeryville-based Pixar for the studio’s unparalleled string of 10 critical and commercial feature film hits. Pixar’s secret relies in part on a small team of writers and storyboard artists working out all the kinks before the film is animated. Story reels are built from the storyboards and this comic-book-like film is screened internally.

John Lasseter, fellow Pixar directors Brad Bird, Andrew Stanton and other studio leaders become the first audience.

"Before we show the story to the world, I have to make Andrew Stanton and Brad Bird laugh or cry or whatever. That’s a tough order, but I think that’s in part a reason for the success of our films," Docter said. "It’s also really surprisingly unusual. I would think everybody would do this. As a filmmaker grab all your friends and say look at this, tell me what’s wrong, how I can make it better and that’s what we do. We tear them apart and then rework them. Not very many other studios do that."

In addition, the story reels and work-in-progress footag is constantly screened internally at Pixar.

"We have this kind of creative brain trust at Pixar and we’ll invite all of the story departments, but then we’ll invite human resources, the kitchen staff or accounting," Rivera said. "We’ll simulate a real audience and we’ll find the commonalities, see if everyone from Brad Bird to the guy in accounting laughed at that or no one did."

Up" is also notable as Pixar’s first 3-D feature. The studio released an animated 3-D short, "Knick Knack," back in 1989, but there were very few theaters 20 years ago equipped to screen 3-D films.

Even though it’s being shown both in traditional 2-D format as well as Disney Digital 3-D, don’t expect "Up" to play with 3-D as a gimmick.

"We tried to use 3-D as just another element to tell the story. So, for example, when Carl is alone in his house we really tried to squash space to make him feel claustrophobic and locked in and then, by contrast, as he floats his house off, we really tried to push the depth and make him feel free," Docter said. "3-D to us is just another tool like lighting, like color, furthering the emotion we’re trying to communicate to an audience. We really tried to use it as a window that you’d look into."

Docter also compared Pixar’s use of high-tech 3-D to stereo sound.

"When I was growing up, my dad had a bunch of those late 50s, early 60s first stereophonic records. You remember those. Trumpets over there. Bongos here. Trombones over there and it was all really extreme. Today, all of the stuff we listen to is in stereo but it’s much more subtle and it’s all about the song.

"I think that’s how we’re approaching 3-D. It’s not about selling 3-D and going hugga bugga at people," he said. "We use it as much as we can to support the storytelling. Hopefully, after 3 minutes, you forget about the 3-D and are just drawn into the film, the story and the characters."

Disney•Pixar Up Now In Theatres!

It’s finally May 29th and Up has now been officially released in the US and Canada!

For those of you who are able to see Up today, I hope you fully enjoy this masterpiece! With your help, we can make it a huge success.

It’s already got marvelous reviews, with 98% of critics favoring Pixar’s 10th film (as of publishing time) and their 10th to be Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes! Don’t forget to promote the film and get your friends out there to see it, advertisements and trailers only go so far, your word of mouth can make Up Pixar’s 10th blockbuster. It’s only good news that analysts are predicting a big $60 million dollar opening for Pete Docter’s second feature film with the company. Major factors pointing to this number are recent performances by blockbuster animated films/demand behind them, the extra cost of 3D and as pointed out above, the extremely positive reviews.

A big "CONGRATULATIONS!" goes out to Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, Jonas Rivera and the whole Up team at Pixar for releasing another piece of quality entertainment that has been praised since well before release and will surely delight the masses starting today! Of course another huge congrats goes out to Pixar on releasing their 10th film, what a triumphant movie for such a huge milestone!

Up is not to be missed, especially by fans of film, animation and of course, you: the Pixar fans, but I’m sure almost any demographic will be moved by it! On that note I’m going to take some time later in the day to highlight some more really cool Up-related business that’s relevant to opening day! From as early as today to as far as Up’s announcement.
Stay tuned.

Visit Up’s official website and while you’re there, purchase your tickets. Also, for all of you Twitter users, help @upcomingpixar make #Up and #Pixar a trending topic!

Snazzy: Angus MacLane's Lego Carl Fredricksen

Pixar animator and LEGO fanatic Angus MacLane is known to make versions of the animation studio’s characters out of the famous toy blocks.

His latest Pixar creation is Carl Fredricksen, the star of Pixar’s 10th feature which is coming to theatres tomorrow. This representation of the curmodgeonly hero not only looks like Carl, but also captures his trademark grumpy emotion. Angus MacLane attributes Lego’s to helping him learn how to animate three-dimensional CGI characters. His previous works include BURN•E, from his directorial debut, WALL•E and Luxo Jr. among others.

You can check out his Flickr photostream for more pictures of his toy block creations.

BBC: Pixar’s Up wins first award at Cannes

Characters from Up

A talking dog named Dug from animated Pixar film Up has won the Palm Dog, a comic alternative to the Cannes Film Festival's main prize, the Palme d'Or.

Voted by British film critics, it has been presented since 2001 to the best canine performance seen at the event.

Dug, given the power of speech by a human voice collar, was the runaway winner of the unofficial prize.

But it faced competition from a black poodle seen in Quentin Tarantino's war film Inglourious Basterds.

'Cone of shame'

The rules were bent this year to allow the talking fox who appears in Lars von Trier's horror film Antichrist to compete.

Moses, a dog represented by a chalk outline in Von Trier's drama Dogville, won the prize when it was presented at the 2003 festival.

The makers of Up will receive the traditional trophy - a leather collar bearing the name of the quirky award in silver letters.

Last year's collar went to Lucy, the dog who went missing in US film Wendy and Lucy.

This year's jury also handed out a "cone of shame" to Filipino thriller Kinatay, in which a dog is seen being hit by a car.

Up is out in the US on 29 May but does not open in the UK until 16 October.

eyeon Fusion used extensively on Dragonball: Evolution

Fusion, the award- winning compositing application from eyeon Software, played a key role in creating the visual effects for Twentieth Century Fox’s Dragonball: Evolution, directed by James Wong.

Winnipeg-based Frantic Films VFX contributed 334 visual effects shots to the film, with VFX supervisors Chad Wiebe and Mike Shand overseeing the work from the company’s Vancouver and Winnipeg facilities, respectively.

According to Wiebe, "Frantic has had a working relationship with eyeon Software for nearly 10 years. I've been here nearly that long and have used Fusion almost exclusively. Fusion works really well from a production standpoint. It enables artists to share tools and ideas among multiple offices. Tools from within a Fusion comp can be copied out in an XML format, and sent through email to quickly share ideas."

Dragonball: Evolution is based on the popular Japanese comic book series created by Akira Toriyama, whose work spawned best-selling graphic novels, video games, and a phenomenally successful television series. The live-action adventure centers on a team of warriors, each of who possesses special abilities. Together, they protect Earth from a force bent on dominating the Universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name.

Wiebe explained that one scene in particular – a battle scene around a lake of lava – became one of the biggest challenges. The characters – Goku and the Fulum Assassins – had to be able to interact fully with the environment.

"The lava lake sequence as a whole presented significant challenges for the Vancouver team, as it was an integration of a number of different visual effects with varying degrees of complexity," said Wiebe. "Shots where we had creatures interacting with the lava lake proved to be especially challenging in terms of compositing."

For the sequence, Frantic provided on-set VFX supervision in Durango, Mexico. Artists at Frantic’s Vancouver facility designed a digital environment, including mountainscapes and a molten lava lake complete with lava falls and crust, with rocks and debris swirling about.

"In addition to the degree of realism required, the shots also needed to maintain continuity with the practical elements, while holding up to a significant degree of color correction," he continued. "The original practical lava lake set did not meet with studio approval, so in order to save the sequence from being cut, it underwent a significant transformation, from a physical plywood and sprayfoam set, built out in the Mexican desert, into a digital labyrinth of smoke and ash that was ultimately used in the theatrical release."

"The reward for developing visual effects technology is seeing the spectacular results created by talented artists. This big screen magic drives visual effects companies, and consequently eyeon to create the necessary tools," said Joanne Dicaire, Director of Sales and Marketing at eyeon Software. "We congratulate the team at Frantic for their outstanding work on Dragonball: Evolution."

eyeon Fusion offers a full 2D and 3D compositing environment, including a 3D particle system, comprehensive integration with 3D animation packages, non-destructive floating-point color correction, paint tools, keying, roto-scoping, advanced look-up tables, character generation, and more. Fusion 6.0 is scheduled for release in early June 2009.

Up Round-Up! (5/27/09)

We’re almost there, only two more days until Up premieres in US theatres. But for now, here are a bunch of Up-related stories (may contain spoilers… and squirrels) that may interest you:

The Life and Times of Pete Docter: Ok, so Pixar fans generally know that Pete Docter is the director of Up, Monsters, Inc. and Mike’s New Car and that he was also a crucial player in many Pixar productions. But what many people don’t know about Pixar’s 3rd ever animator is how he got to Pixar and what this Minnesota native’s life was like before. Find out all that and more with this fantastic 5-page extended biography featuring quotes from family and friends by The Star Tribune.

Bay Area References: As you probably know, Pixar Animation Studios is located right outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. SFGate is reporting that some references in this Pete Docter flick are in fact real life Bay Area locations. They include some of Pete and Jonas’ favorite places in the area. Read about the Fenton’s Creamery (a 114 year old ice cream parlor) and Merritt Bakery (home of the burger cake) in-jokes at their respective links.

Balloon Tech: One of the biggest technical challenges in the making of Up was simulating the thousands of overlapping balloons tethered to Carl’s house. Think about it, each balloon is on it’s own string and they all move randomly, sounds like a challenge to me! Want to learn more on how this technical and artistic marvel was tackled, then head on over to CNET where supervising technical director Steve May explains Up’s balloons in great detail!

Interviews, Interviews, Interviews: We know you like interviews. If more interviews is what you want, more interviews is what you’ll get! First off here’s About.com’s 3 page interview. Screen Crave and Cinematical also got in on the interview madness. NPR Radio has got a little under 30 minutes of audio with Pete Docter, listen in here. For more interviews, check out this earlier post. Interviews, interviews, interviews; I’ll be saying that A LOT more these next few days!

Fun Fact: Pete Docter animated Luxo, Jr. in the Pixar opening sequence!

Enjoy this continuation of the UP Round-Up series, a collection of Up related stories that didn’t quite make it into one post! May 29th, here we come!

Pixar "UP": How to animate lots of baloons

If you want to consider a difficult computational problem, try thinking of the algorithms required to animate more than 10,000 helium balloons, each with its own string, but each also interdependent on the rest, which are collectively hoisting aloft a small house................

SIGGRAPH 2009 Technical Papers Focus on Technology and Advanced Techniques.

The SIGGRAPH 2009 Technical Papers program is the premier global forum presenting groundbreaking research from today's leading international organizations. Topics will feature the latest computer graphic innovations from a detailed simulation of intrusive surgical procedures to the development of infra-red flash photography. A total of 439 submissions were reviewed by a distinguished panel of 54 jurors, and 78 papers were selected for presentation at SIGGRAPH 2009.

Papers cover core topics of computer graphics, such as modeling, animation, rendering, imaging, and human-computer interaction, and also explore related fields of audio, robotics, visualization, and perception.

"These research papers provide a preview of the latest advances in computer graphics, and they highlight how important computer graphics are to art, science, medicine, and other fields," stated Tom Funkhouser, SIGGRAPH 2009 Technical Papers Chair from Princeton University. "SIGGRAPH papers have historically provided the most groundbreaking innovations in computer graphics. This content represents some of the greatest achievements in this field from across the globe and could very well lead to advancements that impact all of our lives."

Select highlights from the SIGGRAPH 2009 Papers Program include:

Bokode: Imperceptible Visual Tags for Camera-Based Interaction From a Distance
Detailed analysis of how to enable a commodity camera to photograph and capture a 3mm barcode from two meters away. The key is to exploit camera bokeh, which maps binary data encoded in directionally varying rays into a large disk. The next step is to decode ID as well as camera pose for augmented reality applications.
Authors:
Ankit Mohan, MIT
Grace Woo, MIT
Shinsaku Hiura, Osaka University
Quinn Smithwick, Media Lab MIT

  • Sculpt your art with ZBrush
  • Optimize if needed your model with the Decimation Master plugin
  • Export it with 3D Print Exporter
Main features
  • Export in STL, Binary and Ascii.
  • Export in VRML.
  • Size in Inches and millimeters.
  • Export the current or all the SubTools.
"The new decimation and STL exportation tools have filled the weakest link in my work flow from creation to fabrication. you could spend many thousands of dollars and not get a better decimator or translator."
T.S. Wittelsbach - House of Wittelsbach - Jeweller

"The 3D Print Exporter continues to save my life on a daily basis. The quality I'm able to get out of ZBrush as a usable file that my other programs can handle has made me a happy camper. You have just opened up a new world for me!."
Adam Ross - Idol Workshop

"Finally! - a direct export from ZBrush to print format! This tool will help decrease the time it takes to get a ZBrush sculpture ready for 3d print production, and open up the services of most 3D Printing Service Bureaus."
Bill Henderson - Creative Director - Offload Studios Inc.

"Going from the final design to rapid protoyping ready parts has been a timely production within itself... That has now been eliminated with Decimation Master and the 3D Printer Exporter plugin for ZBrush. The ability to go directly from ZBrush to a optimized scaled prototype part, eliminating any other software in between, is priceless. Once again Pixologic turns the technical to art."

Dug's Special Mission: Up DVD/Blu-ray Exclusive Short

We all know that Pixar adds a new short film to their new DVD/Blu-ray release, what we didn’t know is what exactly would be included with Up.

We also don’t know what Dug’s Special Mission is, but we’ll be finding out this Fall! What we did know (or at least we predicted) was that Ronnie del Carmen would be directing. A little back story: The pack of dogs Alpha, Beta and Gamma send Dug on this phony excursion, but as it turns out, the dopey dog ends up finding what they were looking for! The new Pixar short film, Dug’s Special Mission, chronicles what it was that the lovable talking mutt was doing before he meets Carl and Russell.

This announcement comes from SciFi Wire’s interview with Up producer Jonas Rivera who tells the website:
"You can imagine we collect so much stuff along the way that doesn’t make it in… There’s, like, volumes and volumes…"
Of course, he’s talking about the great stuff you’ll find in The Art of Up (out today) and the exclusive home video release of Dug’s Special Mission. In more Up DVD/Blu-ray news, Jonas Rivera confirms that the Pixar team has prepared lots of making of featurettes and documentaries on subjects like the tepuis.

Let’s not forget about the theatrical short Partly Cloudy which you’ll be able to see in just 3 days and of course on the home video. Support Ronnie del Carmen’s new book My Name is Dug, by purchasing it here.

(Thanks, JD/via SciFi Wire)

What do you think about this announcement? Was it what you expected? Are you excited?

New Guerrilla CG Video : Basics of UV Mapping

Hi everyone, we've got a new free video over at the Guerrilla CG Project (www.guerrillacg.org)...

Robby Frank has made this video on The Basics of UV mapping for all the newbies!

Here Robby Frank covers the basics of texture unwrapping, otherwise known as UV mapping, the process of wrapping a texture onto a 3d object. We show how a flat image can be warped onto objects to add texture. This method is used widely in 3d graphics, and is used for a variety of maps including, color, specular, bump, displacement, normal mapping and more.

Cheers guys, has been a while since the last update, hopefully we'll get some more up soon.

Nick orders 'Monsters vs. Aliens' pilot

hr/photos/stylus/76575-monsters_vs_aliens_341.jpg

"Monsters vs. Aliens"

NEW YORK -- Nickelodeon has ordered a pilot from DreamWorks Animation for a series based on the firm's recent "Monsters vs. Aliens" movie, DWA CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Tuesday.

He mentioned the pilot order at the 37th Annual J. P. Morgan Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in Boston in an appearance that was Webcast.

DWA and Nick last week announced a deal on the co-production of "Kung Fu Panda: The Series" based on last year's DWA hit. The two also collaborate on the successful "The Penguins of Madagascar," for which, Katzenberg said Tuesday, the partners will launch an aggressive licensing campaign early next year. He said that TV hits make for some of the best licensing opportunities in the industry these days because they aren't event-driven
like movies.

He predicted DWA's annual TV business could bring in annual revenue of $40 million-$60 million and grow from there.

For 2010, DWA had previously already announced "Kung Fu Panda" and "Shrek" TV specials. On Tuesday, Katzenberg confirmed that they were both for NBC. What now has the title "Scared Shrekless" will be a Halloween special, followed by a "Kung Fu Panda" holiday special.

The Disney Store has recently put up a notice that Kevin plushes will be available soon.
