nternet venture 4mm Games spawned from Rockstar Games to tap web games market.

The co-founders of Rockstar Games have formed a new video game company called 4mm. The plan is to make the rollout of games more intuitive for the market by releasing them initially onto the web.

With Jamie King as Head, and Gary Foreman as CTO, the New York City-based company has been created to launch games online, through mobile devices like iPhone before letting them loose on the consoles PS3, XBox 360 and DS, as reported in Variety this week.

The web is considered a very good test market for those games eventually to land in the high-end console market. But the strategy is also a way to keep one step ahead of digital piracy which is rampant in the industry.

Another couple of big names getting on board the venture is former-NBC and Warners executive Paul Coyne and Nicholas Perrett, formerly from Image Metrics. Perrett is CEO of the new company.

Within the new bunch of executives jumping into this talented mix, comes the experience of producing games like 'Grand Theft Auto', 'Midnight Club', 'Bully' and ' Max Payne'. There is extensive experience in the music industries, TV, film, game and online.

There are two titles being developed right now at 4mm. 'As an indie outfit, 4mm isn't looking to partner up with a single publisher to distribute its titles; instead, it's seeking to set up properties at various companies. It may also distribute games on its own, especially on mobile or other digital properties', a company spokesman said.

Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera Make the Rounds

Up director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera have been making the rounds promoting Pixar’s next feature. Reports say they’ve been spotted in New York, Philadelphia and in Cleveland today and more!

First off, we have the interview/Q & A that Docter took part in at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. The audience was treated to the movie and after they could ask Pete any question they wanted. This audio is not only insightful but contains a major spoiler with no warning towards the end. Listen to it here.

Their next stop was this TV interview in Philadelphia with local station Fox 29 where the duo talked about… Up. Many of the typical topics were covered but it’s still worth watching just to see their reactions. The next day, Docter and Rivera stopped by Cleveland’s WKYC where they chatted with the host of their local program, Good Company Today. Both interviewers said they absolutely loved the film.

Last but not least the Boston Phoenix has an extensive interview with Pete Docter. It is written mostly like a conversation so it seems like you’re there in real time while you read. The interviewer also seems to be a fan of Pixar’s work!

Some noteworthy subject matter covered within these interviews was Pete Docter’s upcoming film which he described as an idea that’s still foggy and vaporous in his mind. Could it be something new, or the rumored Monsters, Inc. sequel? We’ll just have to wait and see. Also of note most of the pieces are relatively spoiler free.

Expect more interviews like this during the days leading UP to Pixar’s 10th!

e-on software Ships Ozone 4.0

Ozone 4.0 Released!

HYPER REALISTIC ATMOSPHERES IN 3DS MAX, CINEMA 4D, LIGHTWAVE, MAYA AND XSI

May 20, 2009. Beaverton, Oregon: e-on software, makers of Vue, the leading solutions for natural 3D environments, and creators of breakthrough spectral atmospheric rendering technologies today announced the immediate availability of Ozone 4.0, its suite of atmospheric plug-ins for 3ds Max, Cinema4D, LightWave, Maya and Softimage|XSI.

E-on software also announced that it plans to release the Ozone 4.0 Personal Learning Edition (a fully functional version of Ozone 4.0 that anyone can use at no charge) in the coming days.

Ozone 4.0 - Atmospheres that Come Alive

Ozone 4.0 implements the Spectral 2 cutting-edge technologies developed by e-on software for the simulation and rendering of atmospheric effects. Ozone 4.0 atmospheres provide an accurately simulated environment that affects all elements of the scenes, and behaves according to nature’s rules.

Some of the new features of Ozone 4.0 include:

  • Fully integrated suite of plug-ins:
  • Ozone 4.0 operates as a fully integrated plug-in for 3ds Max, Maya, LightWave, Cinema4D and XSI. It adds all the tools required for the creation of hyper-realistic atmospheres directly in the host application's interface. On top of this, one single license of Ozone 4.0 will work with all compatible applications and renderers (see further down for details).

  • Breakthrough Spectral 2™ and Volumetric atmosphere models:
  • Based entirely on real-world atmospheric behavior, the new Spectral 2™ engine produces ultra-realistic environments with volumetric clouds, accurate light dispersion and natural phenomena such as Godrays. These new technologies realistically model the behavior of our planet's atmosphere to produce all kinds of atmospheric effects.

  • Real 3D Clouds:
  • Highly optimized volumetric cloud layers that you can fly through or use to simulate realistic low-lying fog. Ozone 4.0 Atmospheres are seamlessly integrated in the scene and will directly interact with native elements (for instance: Ozone 4.0 clouds will automatically cast shadows onto native objects).

  • Super-fast rendering technology:
  • Despite the staggering complexity of the atmospheric model it features, Ozone 4.0 renders its atmospheric effects at blazing speed, thanks to e-on software’s highly optimized technology.

  • Animated clouds and sunsets in a breeze:
  • Users can realistically animate the atmosphere, the clouds and the sun, making their skies spring to life, all in a wink! Simply set the direction and speed of the wind, the rate of change, and render on!

  • Extensive library of over 150 predefined atmospheres:
  • Ozone 4.0 includes presets for all kinds of atmospheric conditions: bright daytime, bad weather, sunrise, sunset, night time, etc. Customize the atmosphere using dedicated tools and the library of over 140 preset cloud shapes.

A complete and detailed list of features is available at:
www.e-onsoftware.com/ozone

Pricing and Availability

The Ozone 4.0 Open Beta is available in English for Windows XP and Vista (32 and 64 bits) and Mac OS X 10.4 (Universal Binary).

A single license of Ozone 4.0 will work with all compatible applications and renderers installed on the end user’s system, without requiring the purchase of any Extra Renderer licenses.

  • Ozone 4.0 for Maya works with both MentalRay and Maya software renderers.
  • Ozone 4.0 for Max and XSI works with MentalRay.
  • Ozone 4.0 for LightWave and Cinema4D works with the native renderer.

Ozone 4.0 retails at US$295, with upgrades from Ozone 3.0 available for $95 and RenderNode network rendering licenses at $95 per node.

Luxo Jr. at Pixar Place Confirmed?/More Disney's Hollywood Studios Rumors

Last month we got a mysterious tip from a reader who decided to stay anonymous about a Luxo Jr. animatronic coming to the Pixar Place section of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Now, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting (and citing Upcoming Pixar as the origins for the rumor) that construction walls have gone up yet again in this Pixar themed area, home of Toy Story Midway Mania! They have reason to believe that the enclosure will soon house something "Luxo." Specifically in the Lighting section of Pixar Place where I would presume the rumored animatronic version of Pixar’s "mascot" Luxo Jr. will be seen by visitors of the park. This robot, not unlike the "live" Remy and WALL•E, is part of Disney’s Living Character Initiative. Further proof that we’ll be seeing the lamp comes from this document that states construction is under way for an "aluminum structure" which has "Luxo at [the Toy Story] Mania Building."

More: In related news, there are tons of rumors coming out for the future of this section of the park. You may remember the reports of a Monsters, Inc. rollercoaster coming in 2011. Well I was looking at the most recent version of the Walt Disney World Resort brochure and in the Disney’s Hollywood Studios section there was a half exposed Sulley. Seems like a tease for something big to come considering Monsters, Inc. isn’t a big presence at Hollywood Studios, then again it could be an allusion to the Block Party Bash parade, but still it seems suspicious.

I’m really excited for the future of Pixar Place and DHS (my favorite park) in general now that John Lasseter is a big influence over at Imagineering. For now, I’d say this rumor has been confirmed, full story is developing…
